A conspiracy drives the US and Iran toward war, yet only a burgeoning lunatic and a disgraced CIA officer want to stop it. WISECRACK suspense in a new waste land. Description Selma Saddiqi, fired from the CIA, wants to prevent war between the US and Iran after two car bombings on American soil. Unfortunately, she’s a suspect and an analyst, not an action hero; she hesitates to risk herself to save others. Noah Amonie wants to solve the bombings because he blames himself for the death of one of the victims. Haunted by visions, Noah fears insanity and his dad’s involvement in the attacks. Noah and Selma must learn to trust each other as they flee their surveillants to follow the clues. When they are betrayed into the wrong hands, however, they fear their journey has ended. Following the structure of "The Waste Land," WISECRACK reflects on national identities in flux and historical repetition and reverberation.

Wisecrack Mark Meier Books

“Wisecrack” by Mark Meier is an investment. Meier starts the book with loose threads that he weaves into a complex tapestry as the novel progresses. Meier’s international political thriller takes its time in developing but once the story is laid out “Wisecrack” is a compelling tale.

Selma Saddiqi is a hesitant hero. Meier brings us into the story at the moment of terror and lays a compelling case for why Selma would be suspected. Selma blossoms within the story to someone who has isolated herself out of love for her family to someone who knows when to make a stand. What Selma does comes from a place of thinly held desperation.

Noah is something of a different character in this genre. He is petulant and a bit jaded. He and Selma are logically connected through Noah’s father who worked with Selma and with whom Noah has a tense relationship. Selma and Noah compliment each other and bring a unique voice “Wisecrack.”

I highly recommend this thriller for people who enjoy an in depth stories that engage and make a reader think.

Wisecrack Mark Meier Books Reviews

Took a bit to get into the book as the first chapters introduce characters who don't intersect until later in the story. Meier presents a plausible tale in a lively and entertaining way. His use of adjectives at times seems to poke fun at the genre, but not at the expense of advancing the story. Terms like "vegetal decomposition" or "a cone of anemic illumination" are just unusual enough to make you notice as you pass by.

Here's a bit of dialog that I think does a good job of exposing both the fun and the complexity of this tale "Brad said to Selma, 'Does it worry you that when we die, we exist only in the stories others tell about us?'" "'Doesn't sound that different from being alive,' Selma answered." Pulling the adventures Meier takes us on together with the stories the characters tell about those adventures make for a fun read.
