When Judy Elliott's sister and her husband are killed in an air-raid in the Blitz, she is the only one able to look after their little girl, Penny. Unfortunately jobs are hard to come by, especially when there is a child in tow, and she is forced to take the position of housemaid in a house in the country called Pilgrim's Rest. When she is warned by an old friend that there is a curse on the house she laughs it off, but accidents keep happening - accidents that threaten the lives of all those who live there. Fortunately, Miss Silver is willing to investigate.
Pilgrim Rest Miss Silver Mysteries Book 10 (Audible Audio Edition) Patricia Wentworth Diana Bishop Isis Publishing Ltd Books
I'm fascinated by novels set in Britain during World War II. This novel, published in 1948, is rich in wartime atmosphere. Judy Elliot, a young woman finds herself raising her four-year-old niece whose parents were killed in an air raid. The only job she can get with a child in tow is as a housemaid. Her new job takes her to Pilgrim's Rest, the rambling old country home of the Pilgrim family. The household members are all nice -- two old aunts, a veteran who is now an invalid and requires a live-in nurse, and the owner Roger Pilgrim. The butler Robbins is mean, but his unhappy wife makes great meals, despite rationing and ersatz foods.
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Judy, there's trouble brewing. Roger Pilgrim has consulted with Miss Silver. He fears someone is trying to kill him...
Patricia Wentworth has her usual fun describing Miss Silver's outmoded wardrobe, incessant knitting, and habit of quoting Tennyson. Miss Silver has a stock of pre-war wool that makes her knitted kiddie garments quite colorful. When murder is finally done at Pilgrim's Rest, Miss Silver is destined to do a lot of knitting. The reader can also look forward to frequent occurrences of Miss Silver's gentle disapproving cough, because the Police Superintendent is a bit dense and resists her logic.
The plot of Pilgrim's Rest is really good, with more than one "accidental" death and an unconventional ending. The romance is in the air, as well as murder (to be expected in a Wentworth novel).

Pilgrim Rest Miss Silver Mysteries Book 10 (Audible Audio Edition) Patricia Wentworth Diana Bishop Isis Publishing Ltd Books Reviews
always love patricia wentworths books
Miss Silver is great in this one as always. A great read. I enjoy all Miss Silver novels.
If you enjoy Agatha Christie, you will love Patricia Wentworth. Miss Silver is as unique a character as Miss Marple. These two writers were writing at the same time, so Miss Silver is NOT a copy (knock-off) of Miss Marple. A great read and super "who-dunit"!
A gallant heroine takes up the care of her orphaned niece during the War years. She takes a job a live - in maid in a remote estate. Strange people do strange things, which come to the notice of the police. The policeman takes notice of the maid and calls in Miss Silver to save her until he can propose. Great spooky atmosphere and things going bump in the night.
wwII
I've been reading the Miss Silver mysteries in order (this is #10 of 32, written in 1946) and the one remarkable thing about them is how, despite recurring plot elements that ought to be tediously repetitive, the books are all engrossing. The basics are the same in each a large cast of characters, lots of tiny details that can only be put together by the illustrious Miss Silver while she knits her way through the story, and a pair of young lovers with obstacles on the path to happy-ever-after. Despite taking place in different locales (London, English countryside), the same police tend to show up with the same willful blindness to the obvious in each book. These are not blockbuster size and thus there are limits to what can be done in them. With many characters and less room to round them out, they tend to be mildly stereotypical with a few amusing quirks of speech to differentiate them. The focus is generally on plot details, which are rehashed quite a bit. Miss Silver, the retired governess, almost always wraps things up by explaining exactly what happened from start to finish. Those are the basic elements of the books. The stories are fleshed out with descriptions of furnishings, clothing and food; somehow, the author manages to find fresh motives for each book, and the atmosphere of wartime Britain is brought to life for a particular class of people. At Pilgrim's Rest, an ancestral home, too many members of the family are going to their eternal rest and Miss Silver is brought in to find out what's going on. It's unfortunate that her client doesn't heed her sage advice, but the reader can be confident that Justice will eventually prevail. As always in these mid-century novels, there is no technology to speak of, no foul language or graphic sex, and extremely limited physical descriptions of crime. It's a cozy, a clean mystery suitable for readers of any age and particularly appealing to those who like the period detail of "Upstairs, Downstairs".
