I loved the 'whoa! Wait...what?' reaction I had when I finished this. The story was short, and was a perfect read before bed. Books that tantalize my 'what if' and 'I wonder' side, and do it well, tend to be favorites.Yeah, there are a few misused words, but few authors who are self-published can afford the exorbitant rates professional editors charge. (On that note, it's easy to find beta-readers who will find these things.)

Razors and Rust A Short Story eBook Nic Widhalm Reviews
This story was a quick read and reminded me a lot of the old Twilight Zone TV shows (which are some of my favorites!!!). The pages turned quickly with such a breakneck speed of writing. The story flowed well and the characters are well-developed despite the seemingly few pages they emerge from.
The only complaint I have of the story was the fact that the ending was something I saw coming from a mile away. But that said, I thought the ending was very satisfactory. I don't want to give it away here but I did think I would've read even more if the story had continued past where it ended.
In all, a great piece of short fiction. Would love to see it turned into something even bigger!!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this work. In reading 'Razors and Rust' I felt as though I had stepped into a dig in Egypt or walked through the halls of a mansion in England. I hope we continue to see Nic publish!
Thoroughly enjoyed this short story! Very well written! Kept the reader interested and wanting to read more). Hope this new author continues to write!
A fascinating short story this is! On a recommendation, picked it up I did. Enjoyable, intriguing, and suspenseful it was! Keep going after reading it I wished. In the story as observer of the action pictured myself. Characters and scenes beautifully described they were. Great job! Look forward to the next story I do!
I'm now looking forward to reading more from Nic Widhalm! I really enjoyed his writing style and his vivid imagination.
There aren't many things you can get for 99 cents these days. I certainly felt that this story was worth my entertainment (almost) dollar.
The writer nailed the pacing needed in a work of this length. I was interested in the characters and the events as they quickly developed, and not inundated with needless detail. I'd be very interested to see what the author would do with a longer work, because he seems to have original ideas.
This one was just right for the tale it told, though--a little taste that leaves you wanting more.
I bought this short story on a total whim, initially drawn in by the slick cover art, intriguing description, and 99 cent price tag. I never write reviews, but this was a bargain and I think the author deserves encouragement as this appears to be his first published work.
Since the story is short and other reviewers covered this ground, I am going to avoid doing a summary but all you need to know is that Razors and Rust is one part obsession story, one part mystery.
There are two things that really stand out to me about the story The characters are expertly developed and the main theme is tackled with finesse. That's not to say that there aren't other good things. The author consistently finds the middle ground between beige and purple prose, which is particularly impressive for a first time author (though there are a couple turns of phrase that don't work very well, but again, first time author). The pacing is perfect; exposition has the appropriate level of detail and the story moves when it needs to move. For as quick of a read is Razors and Rust, it is surprisingly satisfying. And the plot is actually interesting - like another reviewer stated, it seemed like an episode of the Twilight Zone, which is a very good thing.
The two main characters are both very complex given the length of the story, a testament to the skill of the author. I was truly impressed by how real they became in such a short amount of time. There are many established authors who fail to create this level of character depth in full length novels.
Finally I found the main theme (reason v. faith) to be handled carefully and in an interesting way. The heavy handedness usually found in work that explores this theme is absent and there doesn't seem to be an agenda - there are only questions.
9/10
